(Travellers | Cities | Routes | Trade Goods | Themes)

In the context of Faxian's Travels:

Ox-head sandalwood (niutou zhantan 牛頭栴檀) is a term for the Sanskrit Candana, transliterated zhantanna 旃檀那, abbreviated zhantan 旃檀 or 栴檀, which is sandalwood (tanxiang 檀香). According to Buddhist legends, the ox-head sandalwood (Go'sisrsa Candana) is very highly esteemed. It grows on only one mountain, whose peak is shaped like an ox-head, hence the name.
