In the early 15th century, at the time of Zheng He's maritime expeditions, the realm of Majapahit in eastern Java was the supreme power, politically and economically, of Indonesia. It comprised East Java, Madura and Bali, and possessed a sphere of influence extending over the coasts of Java and Sumatra, on the Malay peninsula as far north as Nakhon (Ligor), and on the coasts of Borneo as far north as Brunei and as far east as Bandjarmasin
