Zhangye 張掖(Travellers | Cities | Routes | Trade Goods | Themes)
In the context of Faxian's Travels Zhangye is a village in Gansu province at the beginning of the Silk Road. According to the geography chapter of the Jin shu 晉書, the commandery of Zhangye was under the jurisdiction of Yongping 永平 xian. According to Yuanhe junxian tuzhi 元和郡縣圖志, juan 40, Yongping xian is a later name for Lude 觻得 xian of the Han. According to Taiping huanyou ji 太平寰宇記, j. 152, Lude's ruins are 40 li north-west of Zhangye xian (today's Zhangye xian in Gansu).
